The Staatstheater Nürnberg – State Theater in Nuremberg (formerly Opernhaus Nürnberg), completed in 1905, is one of Germany's largest theaters, hosting theater performances, concerts and operas.
About the construction of the State Theater in Nuremberg (originally called the Opernhaus) was decided in 1898. The new theater was opened with considerable delay in September 1905. The result was a beautiful building, which was considered the most expensive theater in Europe at that time. During the World War II, the building was severely damaged by bombs. After the end of the World War II, the theater building was rebuilt and served as a cinema for US Army soldiers.
From 1956, the building became again the Nuremberg Opera for the public, where operas, operettas, classical musicals and chamber concerts were performed. During the general reconstruction in the years 1995 to 1998 the theater was expanded, nowadays there is space for up to 1000 spectators.
To see and to be seen is the motto of the Nuremberg Ball at the Opera, which has been held since 2001 and where it is possible to meet Nuremberg celebrities. In 2003, the building was renamed again the "Staatstheater Nürnberg". Only the underground station close to the State Theatre is named after the original name "Opernhaus".
