Wooden footbridge over the river Pegnitz
Built as the "Langer Steg", it is a wooden footbridge over the river Pegnitz in Nuremberg. It was built as Langer Steg in 1320/25.
Henkersteg was named after the Henkerturm, the former apartment of the city executioner in this tower. During the floods of 1595, it caused ice drift and ice congestion - damage of the bridges over Pegnitz. After the flood, three arches of the city walls were torn down and the executioner's footbridge was rebuilt further to the west. In the years 1657, 1671, 1761, 1776, the hanging sidewalk was restored or rebuilt. It was damaged during the war and rebuilt in 1954.
