Charles Bridge consists of two parts
In fact, the bridge consists of two parts, the Upper Bridge and the Lower Bridge. The upper bridge was built in honour of Emperor Charles VI and his wife Elizabeth in 1728. It was a restoration of a covered broken-up bridge from 1452, originally hung up on stone pillars. The name Charles Bridge remained in honor of this monarch, although it was originally also called Kaiserbrücke or Elisabethbrücke. In the middle of the bridge, on the left and on the right, we can find two obelisks with imperial symbols and sacrificial writings from the people faithful to the emperor. The peace symbol of the olive branch in the beak of a copper eagle commemorates the victory of Charles VI over the Turks.
The Lower bridge is significantly older than the Upper Charles Bridge. It was built of sandstone in 1486 and its past is not as varied as its younger version. To this day, it has been preserved in its original state.
